Civil Registration

Civil registration is the system by which a government records the vital events of its citizens and residents.
Citizens have a legal requirement to notify the relevant authority of any life event which affects the registry. Vital events that are typically recorded include live birth, death, marriage, divorce, adoption, legitimization and recognition, etc.
Civil registration derives legal documents like birth certificates, death certificates, and marriage certificates.  Of course civil registration is a key element on the genealogical research that is why we are interested in identifying when various countries began to register events.  In USA the dates varies by state with some Louisiana counties starting in the early 1800's.
